Tourist District Roundabout Improvement Project (TRIP)

In April, the City Council awarded a $3.9 million contract to Universal Land Construction for the Tourist District Roundabout Project. This project includes the construction of three new traffic roundabouts along SR 202, in-lieu of traffic signals; storm drainage system upgrades; landscaping; decorative street lights, and sidewalks. The major portions of construction are scheduled to be complete by October 31, 2009 with remaining work to be completed in the spring of 2010. The project will be funded through City funds, a $2.1 million grant from the Transportation Improvement Board, and developer contributions.

What is a Roundabout?

A roundabout is a circular intersection where traffic flows around a center island. Roundabouts eliminate the need for traffic signals and are safe and efficient way to move traffic along the road.

Safety: Engineering studies indicate that roundabouts reduce overall accidents by 40%, injury accidents by 75% and fatal accidents by 90%. Roundabouts are also designed for slower vehicle speeds, and there are no traffic signals to run through.

Traffic: Roundabouts help improve traffic circulation through roadway intersections because traffic now yields to other traffic rather than stopping at a signal.

UPDATES:

November 19: Construction work for the week of November 23 consists of the following activities: place permanent pavement markings and paint the driving lanes; power line trenching for street lights on the east side of Woodinville-Redmond Road; adjust water valves, manholes and catch basins to grade; and irrigation work throughout the project.

DAY LANE CLOSURES: Travelers through this area should expect impacts on traffic as intermittent lane closures are necessary for striping and pavement marking placement and power trenching for street lights. Lane closures will be in place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm on Wednesday.

Please note activities are weather dependent and may change due to rain-in particular, striping and pavement marking is subject to change due to weather because placement requires a dry surface.

No work is scheduled for Thursday or Friday in observance of Thanksgiving.

November 12:Construction work for the week of November 16 consists of the following activities: Install permanent signage at the east and west roundabouts; place permanent pavement markings and paint the driving lanes; install curb for splitter islands at the central roundabout; install truck apron at the central roundabout; irrigation work throughout the project.

DAY LANE CLOSURES: Travelers through this area should expect impacts on traffic as intermittent lane closures are necessary for splitter islands construction, striping and pavement marking placement. Lane closures will be in place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. Delays up to 20 minutes should be expected.

November 5: Construction work for the week of November 9 consists of the following activities: Install permanent signage at the east and west roundabouts; place permanent pavement markings and paint the driving lanes; form and install curb for splitter islands at the central roundabout; energize the street lights; irrigation work throughout the project; fill areas backside of sidewalk eastside of the Woodinville-Redmond Road.

DAY LANE CLOSURES: Travelers through this area should expect impacts on traffic as intermittent lane closures are necessary for splitter islands construction, striping and pavement marking placement. Lane closures will be in place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. Delays up to 20 minutes should be expected.

October 29: Construction work for the week of November 1 consists of the following activities: complete project paving, place pavement markings and striping, install curb for splitter islands at the central roundabout, install conduit for power and irrigation on 148th Ave NE and at the Central and East Roundabouts, and landscaping at various project locations.

WEEKEND WORK: Paving is expected to occur this weekend from 8:00 am to 3:00 p.m. if weather allows. Motorists should expect some traffic delays as intermittent lane closures are needed for splitter islands curb placement, final paving, striping, and for the installation of conduit for power and irrigation.

October 22: Construction work for the week of October 26 consists of the following activities: pave final lift on SR 202 and 148th Ave NE; place pavement markings and striping; install curb for splitter islands at the central roundabout; install conduit for power and irrigation at central roundabout; install service cabinet for illumination at NE corner of NE 144th St and Woodinville-Redmond Road. Please note construction activities are weather dependent.

NIGHT LANE CLOSURES: Lane closures will be needed to complete the final lift of asphalt. The lane closures will be in place at night from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.

October 15:Construction work for the week of October 19 consists of the following activities: pre-level paving at various project locations; remove asphalt and install curb on splitter islands at the west roundabout; continue installation of conduit for power and irrigation on the east side of the Woodinville-Redmond Road; install light poles on Woodinville-Redmond Road, NE 145th Street, NE 144th Street, 148th Avenue NE.

DAY LANE CLOSURES: Travelers through this area should expect impacts on traffic as intermittent lane closures are necessary for asphalt removal and curb placement on splitter islands, and for the installation of conduit for power and irrigation. Lane closures will be in place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. Delays up to 20 minutes should be expected.

October 8: Construction work for the week of October 12 consists of the following activities: install stamped concrete at the Central Roundabout; saw-cutting for splitter islands at the Central Roundabout and East Roundabout; continue installation of conduit for power and irrigation on the east side of the Woodinville-Redmond Road; relocate water meter at the Chevron station; plug abandoned storm pipes; pour street light pole bases on Woodinville-Redmond Road; install street light poles, pre-level paving in preparation for final lift of paving later this month; tentative installation of fence at the Ball Field wall. Landscaping will begin on the east side of Woodinville-Redmond Road .

DAY LANE CLOSURES: Travelers through this area should expect impacts on traffic as intermittent lane closures are necessary for placing stamped concrete at the Central Roundabout, moving the water meter at the Chevron Station, saw-cutting the splitter islands at the Central and East Roundabouts, for permanent patching, and for installation of conduit for power and irrigation. Lane closures will be in place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. Delays up to 20 minutes should be expected.

October 5, 2009:Construction work for the week of October 5 consists of the following activities: removal of the traffic signal at the SR202 intersection Monday morning; aligning the Central Roundabout with traffic barrels; install temporary lane striping & blackout the old temporary striping; install truck curb at the Central Roundabout; grinding pavement at the Central Roundabout (SR202/ NE145th Street /148th Avenue NE intersection); continue installation of conduit for power and irrigation on the west side of the main intersection and then install the same on the east side of the Woodinville-Redmond Road; and install street light poles in the west leg of the main intersection and along the Hollywood Vineyard frontage.

DAY LANE CLOSURES: Travelers through this area should expect impacts on traffic as intermittent lane closures are necessary for signal removal at the Central Roundabout, for grinding and placing curb, and installation of the light poles along NE 145th Street , and south along the Hollywood Vineyard frontage. Lane closures will be in place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

September 24, 2009:Construction work for the week of September 28 consists of the following activities: placing patterned concrete in the truck apron at the Woodinville–Redmond Road/NE 144th Street intersection (south roundabout); start work on the Central Roundabout; additional pre-level paving, possible grinding of existing pavement, continue installation of conduit for power and irrigation on the west side of the main intersection, and install street light poles in the west leg of the main intersection.

DAY LANE CLOSURES: Travelers through this area should expect impacts on traffic as intermittent lane closures are necessary for paving, installation of the light poles along NE 145th Street , and the work beginning at the central roundabout. Lane closures will be in place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

September 17, 2009: Construction work for the week of September 21st consists of the following activities: pre-level paving at the central roundabout and Woodinville-Redmond Road / Woodinville Village Road / NE144th Street intersection (east roundabout); curb grading & curb pour at various locations on the project; continued installation of conduit for power and irrigation on the west side of SR202; grading for sidewalk on the west side of SR202; grade, pour, and stamp concrete at the NE 145 th Street / Woodinville Village Road roundabout.

DAY LANE CLOSURES: Travelers through this area should expect impacts on traffic as intermittent lane closures are necessary for paving, curb installation, east roundabout setup and electrical & irrigation conduit installation. Lane closures will be in place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

September 10, 2009Construction work for the week of September 14th consists of the following activities: pre-level paving at the central roundabout (148th Avenue NE); pre-level paving at Woodinville-Redmond Road / Woodinville Village Road / NE144th Street intersection (east roundabout); cone the east roundabout with traffic barrels; install conduit for power and irrigation on the west side of Woodinville-Redmond Road.

DAY LANE CLOSURES: Travelers through this area should expect impacts on traffic as intermittent lane closures are necessary for paving east roundabout set up and conduit installation. Lane closures will be in place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday.
