In April, the City Council awarded a $3.9 million contract to Universal Land Construction for the Tourist District Roundabout Project. This project includes the construction of three new traffic roundabouts along SR 202, in-lieu of traffic signals; storm drainage system upgrades; landscaping; decorative street lights, and sidewalks. The major portions of construction are scheduled to be complete by October 31, 2009 with remaining work to be completed in the spring of 2010. The project will be funded through City funds, a $2.1 million grant from the Transportation Improvement Board, and developer contributions.
What
is a Roundabout?
A roundabout is a circular intersection where traffic flows around a center island. Roundabouts eliminate the need for traffic signals and are safe and efficient way to move traffic along the road.
Safety: Engineering studies indicate that roundabouts reduce overall accidents by 40%, injury accidents by 75% and fatal accidents by 90%. Roundabouts are also designed for slower vehicle speeds, and there are no traffic signals to run through.
Traffic: Roundabouts help improve traffic circulation through roadway intersections because traffic now yields to other traffic rather than stopping at a signal.

State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). |

Project Information:
View roundabout design:

The roundabout system includes one main roundabout with
two internal travel lanes. The two smaller roundabouts
have single lanes and are located on the south and west sides
of the main roundabout. The smaller roundabouts act as slowing
devices for traffic before entering the main traffic circle.
Other improvements associated with this project include:
- Curb, gutter, street lighting, pedestrian walkways, street landscaping, and bicycle lanes
- Trail connection to the Sammamish River trail
- Water quality improvements for storm runoff
Through the use of roundabouts, the project will improve vehicle
and non-motorized safety, increase traffic capacity, make business
access easier and safer, and reduce noise and pollution.
The roundabout will eliminate the need for and delay caused
by the traffic signals at this intersection. Additionally, the
installation of these roundabouts is expected to dramatically
reduce rush-hour delays. It is projected that this particular
roundabout project will reduce the average wait per vehicle
during peak hours from 80 seconds to 50 seconds.
For more information regarding roundabouts, please visit Washington
Department of Transportation.
